A Significant Event Declaration has been issued in Lambton County following severe winter weather that has made roads hazardous and, in some areas, impassable.
The weather event began the evening of February 6, 2026, and continued into the morning of February 7, causing widespread road closures and leaving numerous vehicles stranded across the region.
The Lambton County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is urging the public to avoid all non-essential travel, respect road closures, and use alternate routes where possible. The Lambton County Roads Department and emergency services are actively working to clear roadways and safely remove stranded vehicles, though officials warn that these efforts may take time due to ongoing weather and road conditions.

“If you are currently stuck on a roadway, please follow these important safety tips: remain inside your vehicle. Leaving your vehicle can be dangerous during winter conditions,” an OPP statement said.
“Ensure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Run your engine periodically for warmth, not continuously, and turn off unnecessary electronics to conserve battery power. Use blankets, extra clothing and layers to remain warm. Keep emergency supplies accessible. Turn on hazard lights when running your engine. If safe, tie a bright coloured cloth to your antenna or door handle. Monitor OPP social media channels, 511 Ontario, and local radio for accurate, up-to-date information. Call 911 only for emergencies, such as medical distress or if you are out of fuel. Follow all direction provided by police and emergency services personnel.”
The OPP also issued guidance for motorists who must travel. “Reduce speed and drive according to road conditions. Increase following distance to allow for longer stopping distances. Completely clear snow and ice from all vehicle surfaces, including the roof, windows, lights, and mirrors. Avoid sudden maneuvers and make gradual changes in speed and direction to prevent losing control. Ensure your vehicle has adequate fuel and your lighting systems remains on. Always plan ahead: monitor the weather conditions before heading out. ‘Know Before You Go’. Officials reminded drivers to carry a winter emergency kit that includes blankets, food, water, a flashlight, and a charged phone, and to maintain a full tank of fuel before traveling in inclement weather.
The OPP acknowledged that prolonged road closures can be challenging and frustrating but stressed that public safety remains the top priority. Cooperation from motorists is essential to reopening roadways safely and efficiently.
