Charges laid after intimate partner violence incident, police pursuit

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 30-year-old Sarnia man is facing multiple charges following an alleged intimate partner violence incident that led to a brief police pursuit late Saturday night.

Police said that at about 10 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2026, officers were called to a residence in the area of Exmouth Street and Indian Road after a report of a man and woman arguing in a parking lot. The names and other identifying information of those involved are being withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

When officers arrived, they observed a man and woman arguing, with the man seated in a small SUV. Police said the vehicle reversed from its parking spot and turned toward an officer who was directing it to stop. After briefly braking, the SUV accelerated toward the officer.

Vehicle information was broadcast to other patrol units. A second nearby officer attempted to stop the SUV, but police said it fled the area at a high rate of speed.

Officers spoke with the woman, who had fresh blood on her face and mouth. Police said the man had taken her phone and smashed it on the ground before officers arrived. Alcohol was reported to be a factor in the man’s behaviour. The woman declined offers of assistance, including medical treatment.

At about 10:56 p.m., officers located the suspect vehicle travelling northbound on Christina Street. Additional units were brought into the area. Police said that as the SUV travelled eastbound on Exmouth Street, officers attempted to box it in. The driver began swerving left and right, colliding with the side of a marked Sarnia Police Service vehicle. Efforts to stop the vehicle were discontinued for public safety reasons.

Shortly after midnight, at 12:03 a.m., police located the SUV in the same parking lot where the initial incident occurred. Officers blocked the exit as the driver circled the lot before parking and attempting to flee into a building. He was arrested without further incident.

Police said officers observed signs of alcohol consumption, but the man refused to provide a breath sample.

The accused was charged with assault, mischief, flight from police and refusing to provide a breath sample. He was held for a bail hearing and later released by the court with conditions.

Police say anyone experiencing intimate partner violence can call 911 in an emergency or contact the Sarnia Police Service for non-emergency assistance. Community resources in Sarnia-Lambton also offer support services.
