The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating multiple reports of extortion targeting communities across southwestern Ontario.
“Extortion is a serious crime that affects entire communities. These individuals have employed intimidation tactics, including discharging firearms into victims’ homes and businesses, placing community members at significant risk. This type of violence and intimidation has no place in our communities. The OPP remains committed to identifying those responsible and ensuring they are held accountable for their callous actions. We urge anyone with information related to these extortion attempts to contact police,” said Det. Insp. Matt Watson of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
Police say that since 2024, investigators have identified 10 cases following a similar pattern, in addition to more than 50 cases under investigation by Caledon and Dufferin detachments.
According to police, the incidents have targeted victims in Norfolk, Brant, Middlesex and Wellington counties. The extortion attempts typically involve phone calls or text messages threatening violence unless a large sum of money is paid. Investigators say suspects often demonstrate knowledge of a victim’s home or workplace and appear to target members of the South Asian community.
Police also report several weapons-related incidents in which properties were damaged by gunfire. No injuries have been reported, but investigators believe the shootings are connected to the extortion attempts and threatening communications.
The investigations are being led by OPP West Region under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
Anyone who has received threats or has information related to the incidents is asked to contact police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
