Drug poisoning alert issued in Chatham-Kent amid spike in EMS calls

Chatham-Kent Public Health is warning residents about an increase in drug poisonings and unexpected reactions linked to the local drug supply.

CK Public Health issued the alert after noting elevated opioid-related EMS calls over the past several days. Officials say there are reports of strong tranquilizers appearing in the local drug supply, resulting in cases of heavy sedation.

Health officials emphasize that the unregulated drug supply remains unpredictable and constantly changing, with substances not always matching what individuals expect, increasing the risk of harm or death.

In the event of an overdose, residents are urged to call 911 immediately, administer naloxone if an opioid overdose is suspected — noting that more than one dose may be required — and remain with the person until paramedics arrive.

For those who use substances, public health advises taking precautions such as avoiding using alone, having someone check in, and being aware of tolerance levels. Officials also encourage individuals to start with small amounts, avoid mixing substances, and seek information about the current drug supply from others.

The alert also highlights the availability of the National Overdose Response Service Safer Consumption Hotline and encourages residents to access harm reduction tools, including free naloxone kits available through local programs.

Public health officials are asking the community to share the warning to help raise awareness and reduce the risk of drug poisonings.
