The Public Utilities Commission for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is undertaking a Water and Wastewater Master Plan Update Study aimed at identifying infrastructure needs and planning for future growth beyond 2051.
The study is being prepared in accordance with the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment requirements for master plans. The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission currently services approximately 39,000 water customers and 31,000 wastewater customers across the municipality.
Officials say the study will review previous capital plans and identify additional upgrades required to sustainably provide municipal water and wastewater services. The process will also assess infrastructure requirements needed to support long-term growth while continuing to improve services for existing residents, businesses and institutions.
The work is being coordinated with several other municipal planning initiatives, including the Chatham-Kent Official Plan Update, the Southwest Servicing Study, the Transportation Mobility Master Plan, and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The resulting servicing solutions are intended to be financially, socially and environmentally sustainable while meeting the community’s potable water and sewage servicing needs for the long term.
To gather public feedback, three Public Information Centres will be held where proposed servicing solutions will be presented. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and provide input. Once completed, the final study report will be made available for public review and comment.
