Suspended driver charged after traffic stop leads to drug trafficking investigation

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A traffic stop for expired licence plates led to a drug trafficking charge after police say suspected methamphetamine and related items were found in a vehicle on March 17.

At about 10 p.m., a patrol officer observed a suspicious vehicle travelling eastbound on Nelson Street with expired plates and conducted a stop near Gordon Street.

Police say the driver identified herself verbally but could not produce a driver’s licence. A records check determined she was a suspended driver, and she was placed under arrest. The passenger was directed to exit the vehicle as it was to be administratively impounded.

During a search incident to arrest for documents, officers located a purse containing a black-and-white handbag. Inside, police say they found drug paraphernalia, a scale and a bag containing a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

Both occupants were initially arrested for drug trafficking. Further investigation resulted in the passenger being released unconditionally.

A 25-year-old Courtright resident was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine. Following a bail hearing, she was released with conditions.
