Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 27-year-old man was arrested for shoplifting within hours of being released on bail for a previous theft, police said.
Officers were called March 19 at about 1:05 p.m. to a convenience store on Finch Drive after a suspect allegedly stole multiple ice cream products and fled without paying. A description was broadcast to patrol officers.
At approximately 1:20 p.m., police located a man matching the description and arrested him. A search incident to arrest found 10 tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream in his bag, police said.
The accused, who has no fixed address, was held for bail on charges of theft under $5,000 and two counts of breach of probation. Following a bail hearing, he was released with conditions.
“Community safety includes supporting our local businesses in deterring theft. Offenders who steal someone else’s property need to be held accountable, but still taking into consideration any individual circumstances. If someone needs access to support and resources, they are available without needing to resort to crime and the victimization of others.” – Chief Derek Davis, Sarnia Police Service
