Sarnia Police Service officials allege: The Sarnia Police Service is reminding residents that mobility scooters are not considered vehicles under Ontario law and cannot be driven on roadways.
Police say earlier this week, a member of the service’s traffic unit stopped the operator of an enclosed mobility scooter that was being driven on the road. The individual was issued a warning and advised to use sidewalks when operating the device.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, mobility scooters — including enclosed models — are classified as wheelchairs. As a result, individuals using them are considered pedestrians.
Police note that if no sidewalk is available, mobility scooter users must travel on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic and remain as close to the left side as possible, in accordance with Section 179 (1) of the Act.
The service is reminding the public that road safety is a shared responsibility and is encouraging all road users to be aware of and follow traffic laws that apply to their specific mode of travel.
