Traffic stop on Walpole Island First Nation leads to impaired driving and weapons charges

OPP officials allege: A 26-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop by police on Walpole Island First Nation.

Police say members of the Walpole Island Police Service initiated a traffic stop on Chiefs Road on March 31, 2026, just before 3:30 p.m., while conducting general patrol.

During the investigation, officers determined further testing was required and requested assistance from the Lambton detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.

As a result of the investigation, Thomas Altiman, 26, of Walpole Island First Nation, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code, the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Licence and Control Act.

The charges include operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, failure or refusal to comply with a demand, multiple firearms-related offences, mischief under $5,000, driving without a licence and operating a vehicle with an open container of liquor.

Police say a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment were also issued.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia.

“The Walpole Island Police Service and Lambton OPP remain committed to taking impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education,” police said. “Drivers are reminded that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving. If you see anything suspicious or suspect an impaired driver, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.”
