The Ontario government and the Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents to take precautions as black bears emerge from hibernation and begin searching for food.
Officials say early spring can be a high-risk period for bear encounters, as natural food sources are limited and bears are more likely to be attracted to garbage, bird feeders and other human-related food sources.
“Never feed or approach bears.”
The province is urging residents to take simple steps to reduce attractants around their homes, including properly securing garbage, cleaning outdoor cooking equipment and keeping pet food stored indoors.
“Store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids, preferably indoors.”
Authorities also recommend delaying placing garbage at the curb until collection day and removing bird feeders during the spring and summer months.
“Wait until pickup day to put out garbage for collection.”
Residents are encouraged to stay alert, keep pets under control and notify neighbours if bear activity is spotted in their area.
“Keep dogs on leash and store pet food indoors.”
The province operates a non-emergency Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327, available 24 hours a day from April 1 to Nov. 30.
Officials say anyone encountering a bear that poses an immediate threat or shows aggressive behaviour should call 911 or their local police department.
