CKHA completes laboratory transformation with new automation technology

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance says it has completed a major upgrade to its laboratory services at the Chatham site with the introduction of new automation technology aimed at improving diagnostic testing.

The hospital announced Thursday that the project included a full refresh of its chemistry platforms, highlighted by the installation of new laboratory equipment and a track automation line designed to enhance efficiency and accuracy in testing.

After more than a decade using its previous system, the laboratory underwent a three-phase modernization that included structural renovations, validation and launch of new instrumentation, and the integration of an auto-verification system for test results. The upgrades included wall removals and electrical work to support two new Quidel Ortho Vitros 7600 chemistry analyzers.

“Investing in modern technology like the Quidel Ortho Vitros 7600 is a key part of our strategic plan commitment to being responsible stewards of our resources while maximizing patient care,” said Adam Topp, President and CEO of CKHA. “By streamlining our laboratory operations, we are not only improving efficiency, we are also ensuring that our team has the best tools available to support the health and well-being of the Chatham-Kent community.”

The project involved collaboration with frontline staff, regional partnership with Bluewater Health, and specialized training for laboratory teams. The new analyzers went live in August 2025, followed by the implementation of an automated track system in September and the addition of an auto-verification system.

Hospital officials say the new system automates how samples are processed and includes built-in redundancies to reduce manual work and avoid delays, helping ensure timely and reliable results for clinicians.

“Modernizing our laboratory infrastructure is essential to providing high-quality, and timely care,” said Jolene Kresan, Director of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Programs at CKHA. “The addition of the track automation line and mirrored analyzers means our team can process critical tests more efficiently, reducing manual handling and ensuring that our clinicians have the data they need to make informed health care decisions 24/7, 365 days a year.”

CKHA said the investment supports its goal of delivering modern, equitable care through improved diagnostic capabilities at its Chatham and Wallaceburg sites.
