Walpole Island First Nation warns of sewage contamination risk in roadside ditches

Walpole Island First Nation council is warning residents to avoid contact with ditches along Central Tecumseh Road due to potential health risks from contamination.

In a community notice, officials said recent testing and observations have identified sewage contamination in sections of the ditch system.

“Due to contamination concerns in the ditches of Central Tecumseh Road Area on Walpole Island, community members are advised to exercise caution and avoid contact with the ditches in this area.”

The notice says the contamination poses a potential health risk, particularly for children who may come into contact with contaminated water or soil and then touch their face or mouth.

Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig Elementary School has been notified of the issue and has been advised not to clean the ditches as part of planned Earth Day activities.

“Until further notice, please refrain from any cleanup or educational activities that involve direct contact with ditch water, sediment, or debris in this area.”

Council said staff are actively working to address and monitor the situation, with updates to be provided once conditions are confirmed to be safe.

“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
