Province provides $2.5M planning grant for Wallaceburg hospital redevelopment (Video)

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance says a $2.5-million capital planning grant from the provincial government marks a significant milestone in its “Our Hospital Our Future” redevelopment project at the Wallaceburg site.

The funding supports the next phases of the provincial capital planning process, including the completion of Stage 2.2, which involves an advanced sketch plan report and integrated site plan, and Stage 2.3, which focuses on final contract documents. The organization says the completed plans will form the basis for a competitive procurement process once the Ministry of Health approves the Stage 2.3 submission.

“This $2.5 million investment marks an exciting step forward for Wallaceburg and the future of local health care,” said Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton–Kent–Middlesex. “Advancing this redevelopment brings us closer to a modern facility that will enhance care for patients and families across the community. I also want to recognize the incredible support from local residents who have rallied behind this project—your generosity and advocacy have helped make this progress possible. Together, we’re building a stronger future for health care in Wallaceburg.”

The grant brings total provincial planning funding for the project to $3.5 million, following previous grants of $500,000 in 2019 and 2022. The redevelopment includes a 22,000-square-foot addition that will house a new emergency department, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and inpatient medicine unit.

“Moving into these advanced stages of planning is a pivotal moment for our organization and the residents of Chatham-Kent,” said Adam Topp, president and CEO of CKHA. “This grant allows us to finalize the intricate design details and technical documents required to bring our vision to life. We are committed to providing high-quality, local care, and this progress ensures that our facilities will match the excellence of the medical services our teams provide every day.”

The organization says the redevelopment is both a clinical necessity and a community-driven priority, aimed at modernizing infrastructure, improving patient flow and integrating services into a more efficient environment.

“Our donors and community members have been the heartbeat of this campaign from the very beginning,” said Christine Mitchell, president and CEO of the CKHA Foundation. “Seeing the province match that local enthusiasm with this $2.5 million investment is incredibly validating. It reinforces the fact that the ‘Our Hospital, Our Future’ project is a shared priority, and we are thrilled to see the momentum continue as we prepare for the eventual construction phase.”

CKHA says it will continue refining architectural and technical plans as it moves toward construction, with the goal of improving access to care in the region.
