The Sarnia Police Service says it continues to actively investigate a shooting in the early morning hours of April 10 that left one young man dead and two young adults with non-life-threatening injuries.
Lambton College later identified the victim as Dane Nisbet, a former student who was 20 years old.
“Lambton College is mourning the loss of Dane Nisbet, a former student and member of our community. He was 20 years old. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. Our flags are at half-mast in his memory,” the college said in a statement posted at 2:28 p.m.
Police say the initial response was extensive, with all available patrol units attending the scene. Once a firearm was confirmed, the Emergency Response Team and K9 units were deployed to search for any additional suspects, victims or weapons.
At the same time, investigators began interviewing a large number of witnesses and gathering evidence from all available sources.
Forensic investigators remain at the scene and are expected to be there for an extended period due to the serious nature of the incident and the volume of evidence to be processed. Police say various investigative techniques and resources are being used to identify and locate the suspect or suspects, and no arrests have been made.
The college said the shooting occurred at its Student Administrative Council-run pub on campus and expressed concern for those affected.
“Our thoughts are also with the two others injured this morning and with everyone impacted by the senseless act of violence that occurred in the early hours of this morning at our Student Administrative Council-run pub on campus,” the statement said.
The Sarnia Police Service said it is working to prevent misinformation or speculation, adding there is no information to suggest the incident targeted Lambton College or the general crowd in attendance. Police also said there is no information to support speculation of any political motivation.
“Sarnia Police Service are leading a homicide investigation and we are cooperating fully. According to Sarnia Police, they have received no information indicating this incident targeted Lambton College or the general crowd in attendance.
