The Thames Art Gallery is launching two new exhibitions this month, highlighting both an international artist and emerging local talent.
The gallery announced Hyphenated by Ukrainian artist Lana Matskiv alongside Here I Am, an exhibition featuring work from high school students across Chatham-Kent.
Hyphenated brings together more than 40 works, including paintings, drawing-based collages and immersive installations. The exhibition explores portraiture, still life and multifigure compositions, with a focus on symbolism and layered storytelling.
According to the gallery, the concept of the “hyphen” is central to Matskiv’s work, representing a connected space where histories, cultures and personal narratives intersect and evolve.
Here I Am showcases the work of students in grades 9 through 12, highlighting a range of artistic approaches and media as young artists share their perspectives and creative development.
A public reception featuring entertainment and refreshments is scheduled for April 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with voting for the People’s Choice Awards taking place earlier in the evening. Student award winners will be announced following the voting period.
The gallery said this year’s awards were made possible through support from Cathy Van Raay-Myers, Salus Mutual and The Andersons.
Both exhibitions will run from April 17 to July 5 at the gallery, located inside the Chatham Cultural Centre. Admission is by donation, with regular hours Wednesday through Sunday and extended hours on Saturdays.
