Former Chatham-Kent police officer charged in SIU sexual assault investigation

A former Chatham-Kent police officer is facing multiple charges following an investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog into alleged incidents dating back to 2009.

The Special Investigations Unit says its director has reasonable grounds to believe Kenneth Miller committed criminal offences in connection with complaints of sexual assault involving a person who was a minor at the time.

The SIU said it was contacted by the Chatham-Kent Police Service on Sept. 8, 2025, after a woman came forward to report incidents involving an on-duty constable.

Miller has been charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of sexual exploitation and one count of breach of trust under the Criminal Code.

He was arrested earlier in the day by SIU investigators and later released on conditions, including that he not communicate directly or indirectly with the complainant.

Miller is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham on May 19 at 9 a.m.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said Miller resigned from the service in March 2018.

Police acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and their potential impact.

“The Chatham-Kent Police Service recognizes the sensitive nature of these allegations and acknowledges the impact such matters can have on survivors and the community. We remain committed to accountability, transparency and maintaining the trust and confidence of the community we serve,” the service said in a statement.

The SIU said it will not provide further comment as the matter is before the courts.

The agency is an independent civilian body that investigates incidents involving police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm.
