Police address concerns over off-road vehicle use on Wheatley trails

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: The Chatham-Kent Police Service says it is aware of community concerns about the use of dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles on trails in the Wheatley area, including the Arboretum Trail.

Police say unauthorized or unsafe use of motorized vehicles on multi-use pathways can pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists and families.

Under municipal bylaws and provincial legislation, such activity may be restricted and could result in fines, along with possible charges under the Highway Traffic Act or the Trespass to Property Act.

Officers, including the traffic management unit, have been directed to monitor the area when resources allow.

Police are encouraging residents to report incidents to support enforcement efforts.

“CKPS reminds the public that incidents must be reported to the Chatham-Kent Police Service in order to support enforcement efforts. CKPS will continue to provide public education, conduct directed enforcement and work collaboratively with municipal partners to promote the safe use of community spaces on its social media platforms,” police said.

Anyone who witnesses unsafe or unauthorized off-road vehicle activity is asked to contact police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
