We often receive calls about injured or orphaned wildlife, and while our name is Pet and Wildlife Rescue, we want to help clarify an important distinction.
Each year, we assist in rescuing and transporting over 500 wildlife animals, and we will continue to do everything we can to support them.
That said, PAWR is not a wildlife rehabilitation centre.
We are not equipped or licensed to treat or house wild animals.
What we do offer:
When possible, we help by transporting wildlife to licensed rehabilitation centres—but this depends on volunteer availability or when our officers are able to assist.
What’s important to understand:
Wildlife response is not part of our contract with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, meaning this work is done above and beyond our funded services, thanks to our dedicated team and volunteers.
Because of this, we kindly ask for your understanding that we are not able to respond to every call involving injured or orphaned wildlife in our community.
A note on kindness:
We understand these situations can be emotional, but being hostile toward staff when we’re unable to help does not improve the outcome for the animal. The same goes when contacting wildlife rehabilitation centres—many of these individuals are volunteering their time, pouring their hearts into this work, at no cost. Showing patience and respect goes a long way. Frustration is understandable, but directing it at those trying to help only makes an already difficult situation harder for everyone.
If you find wildlife in need:
• Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation centre directly for guidance
• Limit handling (for your safety and theirs)
• Keep pets and people at a distance
We care deeply about all animals and remain committed to helping wildlife whenever we are able. Thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued support.
