United Way event aims to address period poverty in Chatham-Kent

United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent is calling on the community to help tackle period poverty through a donation drive and social event next month.

The organization says menstrual hygiene products remain among the most requested but least donated items at local food banks and shelters, as demand for emergency assistance continues to rise.

A drop-off event and community social is scheduled for May 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Match Eatery & Public House.

Residents are encouraged to donate items such as tampons, pads, menstrual cups and other hygiene products. Community members can also organize workplace or school drives, or contribute through sponsorship opportunities to support the initiative.

Organizers say attendees can drop off donations and leave or stay for the event, which will include complimentary appetizers, opportunities to connect with others and prize draws.

The United Way says monetary donations will also be accepted to help purchase products for distribution through front-line services across Chatham-Kent.
