Chatham man charged after allegedly refusing roadside breath demand

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 49-year-old Chatham man has been charged after allegedly refusing to comply with a roadside breath demand during a R.I.D.E. spot check in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere program on Lacroix Street on May 16, 2026, at approximately 11:41 p.m.

Police said officers observed a vehicle attempting to avoid speaking with officers and approached the vehicle to speak with the driver.

Officers demanded the driver provide a sample of his breath into an Approved Screening Device, police said.

The man was arrested for failure or refusal to comply with demand.

Police said he was later released with a future court date of June 23, 2026.

His vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence was suspended.
