Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent breaks ground on 10th home build in Dresden (Video)

The 10th build for Habitat for Humanity Chatham‑Kent marked an important milestone this week as the organization held its groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, May 27 in Dresden.

The event took place at 273 Main Street, the future site of a new home that will soon welcome its next partner family.

Donors, volunteers, community supporters and the family selected for the build gathered to celebrate the start of construction and the continued growth of the program.

Habitat for Humanity Chatham‑Kent is a nonprofit organization that works to create safe, stable housing for local families through an affordable mortgage model.

Homes are sold to partner families at no interest and with payments geared to income, ensuring that monthly costs do not exceed 30 percent of gross household income.

The approach is designed to support long‑term stability, financial security and the ability for families to make forward‑thinking decisions.

Funds donated by community members and organizations, along with the mortgage payments received from partner families, are reinvested into the Fund for Humanity.

This revolving fund allows Habitat for Humanity Chatham‑Kent to continue building affordable homes for families across the region.

Since 2009, the organization has mobilized volunteers, donors and community partners to help local families build strength, stability and self‑reliance through affordable homeownership.

Their work continues to provide a foundation for healthier, more secure futures for families throughout Chatham‑Kent.

The recipients of the Dresden home are Chelsey Labelle and her daughters, Hillary, age 12, and Maddy, age 10.

Construction is expected to be completed in September or October.

The home will be a two‑storey build featuring three bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room, offering the family space to grow and settle into their new chapter.

Mayor Darrin Canniff noted that the land for the project was donated to Habitat for Humanity rather than put up for tax sale, helping with the affordability of the home.
