Dresden library launches summer reading season with kick-off celebration

The Dresden branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library is gearing up for a summer of free activities designed to encourage reading, learning and family fun.

Library officials say the branch will offer programs throughout the summer aimed at inspiring reading and regular library visits among children and teens. Activities will include storytimes and singalongs for young children, as well as crafternoons and science experiments geared toward older children. Other planned programs include bingo, bubble activities, a magic show, fairy gardens and additional events for all ages.

CKPL’s Summer Reading Program will feature activities and reading challenges for children aged 10 and under, as well as tweens and teens.

Officials say summer reading plays an important role in helping children maintain and improve their reading skills, prevent learning loss and prepare for the next school year. Participants in the program will also have opportunities to win prizes donated by local businesses and service clubs.

The library is encouraging families to explore the wide range of materials and services available through their local branch. In addition to traditional books, cardholders have access to ebooks, audiobooks, manga, picture books and magazines, as well as music, television and movie streaming services.

Residents who do not already have a Chatham-Kent Public Library card can obtain one by visiting the library’s website at www.ckpl.ca or by stopping by their local branch.

The Dresden branch will officially launch its summer programming with a Summer Reading Kick-Off event on Friday, June 26, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The celebration will feature the CK Play Rangers, a dunk tank, carnival games and other family-friendly activities.
