St. Clair Catholic marks National Indigenous Peoples Day

St. Clair Catholic District School Board is recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day through educational activities and acts of reflection across its schools and offices.

Observed annually on June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day honours the cultures, histories and traditions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The date coincides with the summer solstice, a time of cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous communities.

Students are participating in learning experiences focused on the significance of the solstice and the Strawberry Moon, Indigenous art and music, land-based learning and community celebration.

The board said these activities are intended to provide meaningful opportunities for students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Indigenous Peoples.

To mark the occasion, St. Clair Catholic schools and offices raised the Every Child Matters flag on Friday, June 19. The flag, created by Cedric Isaac of Bkejwanong Territory, will remain raised until the end of the day on June 22.

The board said the gesture reflects its commitment to honouring the lives, stories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples while emphasizing the importance of remembrance, respect and reconciliation.

Additional information and educational resources are available through the board’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit education website, here.
