A Chatham-born physician has been recognized with a national award highlighting excellence in family medicine training.
Dr. Alexandra Ferrara has received the Leonora Sheppard Award in Family Medicine from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, an honour presented to a resident demonstrating outstanding clinical performance and a commitment to community-based care in Ontario.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Ferrara for earning this meaningful recognition,” said Dr. Lindsey Sutherland, Chatham-Kent Regional Academic Director, Distributed Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. “She is highly deserving of this award, and her passion for supporting local health care makes her an exceptional asset to our community and the broader provincial health care system as a whole.”
Dr. Ferrara, who was born and raised in Chatham, completed undergraduate studies at Western University, followed by a Master of Public Health at Brock University and medical training at the University of Limerick. She says she plans to establish a family medicine practice in Chatham-Kent.
“I am incredibly thankful to receive the Leonora Sheppard Award,” said Dr. Ferrara. “Being recognized for my commitment to comprehensive community Family Medicine is an absolute honor. I am truly excited to continue practicing in Ontario and look forward to supporting the health and well-being of our communities as I transition into my full-time practice.”
Dr. Zeke Milkovic, Chief of Staff at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, said the recognition reflects the strength of the region’s medical training environment.
