Chatham driver charged with impaired driving after parking lot traffic stop

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 44-year-old Chatham man is facing an impaired driving charge after a traffic stop in Chatham.

Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service conducted the stop at about 12:24 a.m. on June 27 after observing a vehicle being driven aggressively through a private parking lot near McNaughton Avenue East.

Police said the vehicle stopped shortly afterward in the driveway of a residence, where officers began an investigation.

Officers observed signs of impairment and demanded a roadside breath sample using an Approved Screening Device. The driver registered a fail and was arrested.

He was taken to Chatham-Kent Police Service headquarters, where two breath samples were provided that police said registered over the legal limit.

The man has been charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

His driver’s licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded under provincial legislation.

He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 5.
