Traffic stop leads to impaired driving charges in Sarnia

OPP officials allege: An individual is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop in Sarnia.

On July 10, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a member of the Lambton County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police was conducting general patrol in the westbound lanes of Highway 402 when they observed a vehicle travelling at an excessive speed. A traffic stop was subsequently conducted on Maxwell Street at Indian Road in the City of Sarnia.

A 19-year-old St. Clair Township resident was charged under the Criminal Code and the Highway Traffic Act with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus, and driving a motor vehicle to perform a stunt involving excessive speed. A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment were initiated as per statute.

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia on Aug. 17.

Lambton County OPP said it remains committed to taking impaired drivers off the roads through enforcement and public education, reminding drivers that no amount of alcohol or drugs in one’s system is safe when driving.
