Scouts Canada has released a guide outlining the requirements for adults looking to volunteer with the organization.
According to the guide, prospective volunteers must first register through MyScouts.ca, then read and sign the organization’s code of conduct, which is reviewed and re-signed annually. Volunteers must also complete Scouting Fundamentals and Respect in Sport training to understand the youth program and how to manage bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination.
The process also requires a police record check with a vulnerable sector search, provided locally, while those in Manitoba and Nova Scotia must also request a child abuse registry check.
Volunteers need approval from their group commissioner, must supply five references with three passed checks, and will take part in a one-hour interview with their group commissioner and another Scouter. Once the process is complete, screening is confirmed and council approval is granted.
