It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Peter Sands in Sarnia on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at the age of 59.
A proud member of Walpole Island First Nation, Peter lived a life grounded in faith, kindness, and love. His relationship with Jesus shaped who he was, and he quietly reflected Christ’s love through his generosity, humility, and compassion for others.
Peter is the son of the late Joseph Elger & Ellis Jean (Lallean) Sands. Peter was the beloved brother of Brenda Whiteye, Rocky (Martha) Sands, Linda Classens, Judy Hall, Rozzy (Doris) Sands, Joley White, Lily Sands (the late Rick) and the late Dale (the late Buffy) Sands.
Peter’s heart was always in the outdoors. A lifelong duck hunter and respected fishing and hunting guide, he found peace on the water, in the marsh, and among the beauty of God’s creation. Whether he was muskrat hunting, guiding others to the best fishing and hunting spots, or walking the woods in search of morel and puffball mushrooms, Peter treasured every season and every opportunity to be on the land. He delighted not only in the harvest but in the experience itself, sharing his knowledge, stories, and laughter with family, friends, and all who had the privilege of spending time with him. To many, Peter was more than a guide—he was a trusted friend, a teacher, a storyteller and someone whose love for the outdoors inspired everyone around him.
Above all, Peter loved his family. He was a devoted brother, a proud uncle, and a loyal friend whose warmth, gentle spirit, and easy smile made everyone feel welcome. His nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart, and the love, laughter, guidance and memories he shared with them will be cherished forever. His quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep love for those around him will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg on Saturday, August 1 from 5 – 8 PM. The funeral will be celebrated at the Walpole Island Sports Complex 2 PM on Sunday, August 2. Interment to follow at Highbanks Cemetery.
Cherished stories and tributes may be left for the family at www.CavanaghFuneralHome.ca.
Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing he has gone home to be with his Saviour.
