Eliza Ann John ‘Waazaawi-Wabigoon Kwe, Black-eyed Susan Woman’ passed away peacefully at St. Angela’s Meadow in Chatham on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the age of 87.
Eliza was the daughter of the late William and Adeline (Sword) Blackbird. Beloved wife of the late Jasper John. Loving mother of Adam John (Bonnie) and the late Jay John and Bruce John (Vickie). Dear grandmother of Ivan (Cassandra), Ryan and Colin and great grandmother of Winona, Deacon, Kaden and Marcel. Sister of Verena B, Veronica A, and the late Marianne B, Sadie G., William B, Simeon B. Jr., Betty B. ,Ida K, Keitha H. and Frances A.
Eliza was a gifted quilter, having created and gifted over 160 quilts amongst her community. She had her diploma in early childhood education and had worked at the Walpole Island Band Office for many years.
Family and friends are invited to Eliza’s home, 110 Nahdee Lane on Walpole Island First nation for visitation from 2 PM on Monday, August 24. The funeral will be held at the Walpole Island Sports Complex on Tuesday, August 25 at 10 AM. Interment to follow at Highbanks Cemetery.
