The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission is asking residents and businesses connected to the Chatham water system to conserve water over the next few days as crews continue work toward a planned repair of a major water transmission line.
In addition to Chatham, the commission said residents and businesses in Grande Pointe, Pain Court, Dover Centre, Mitchell’s Bay, Dresden, Tupperville, Eberts, Jeannette’s Creek, Thamesville and Kent Bridge are being asked to minimize non-essential water use through Friday, August 28.
Residents can continue to use water normally for essential household needs, including drinking, cooking and bathing. The commission said the conservation request is focused on reducing non-essential uses of water over the next few days to help maintain adequate water supplies while repairs are completed.
Customers are asked, where possible, to postpone activities such as lawn and garden watering, washing vehicles or outdoor surfaces, filling or topping up swimming pools and hot tubs, and other activities that require significant amounts of water.
The commission said there is currently no impact to the safety or quality of drinking water, and residents are not expected to experience an interruption to their water service.
The conservation request is a precautionary measure intended to reduce demand and protect available water supplies while the repair is underway.
The commission said the cooperation of residents and businesses across the affected communities over the next few days will help reduce demand on the system and ensure adequate water remains available while the repair is completed.
The government of Ontario recommends keeping a fully stocked 72-hour emergency preparedness kit. When building a kit, residents are advised to track expiry dates on bottled water and keep four litres per person per day on hand for drinking, food preparation, hygiene and dishwashing.
