Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Four people have been arrested on impaired driving charges following separate incidents across Chatham-Kent over the weekend.
On Saturday at approximately 11:40 p.m., members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere checkpoint on Lacroix Street in Chatham when officers noted a vehicle turn into a parking lot to avoid speaking with police. Officers approached the vehicle and requested the driver provide a sample of his breath into an approved screening device, which registered a fail. A 44-year-old Amherstburg man was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police headquarters for further testing, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. He was charged with operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 milligrams or more, and released on a Form 10 with a court date of Oct. 27, 2026.
On Sunday at approximately 2:36 p.m., police were dispatched to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Longwoods Road, where only minor physical injuries were reported. While speaking with one of the drivers, an officer noted a strong scent of alcohol on the man’s breath. He was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police headquarters, where he provided samples of his breath. A Charing Cross man was charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 milligrams or more. He was released on a Form 10 with a court date of Oct. 27, 2026.
Shortly after, at approximately 2:52 p.m. on Sunday, police were dispatched to an address on Queen Street in Chatham, where a man was located asleep in his vehicle, which was still running. The officer formed grounds for operation while impaired, and the man was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police headquarters for further testing. Upon arrival, he refused to provide samples of his breath. A 32-year-old Windsor man was charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, and failure or refusal to comply with a demand. He was released on a Form 10 with a court date of Oct. 27, 2026.
Later that evening, at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, police were dispatched to Kay Avenue in Wheatley following a report of people driving erratically and doing donuts. Through investigation, police formed grounds that the driver had been consuming alcohol. An officer requested the driver provide a sample of his breath into an approved screening device, which registered a fail. The man was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police headquarters for further testing, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. A 19-year-old Wheatley man was charged with operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 milligrams or more, and released on a Form 10 with a court date of Oct. 29, 2026.
