The Chatham-Kent Public Library will unveil a plaque honouring Chatham-born author and screenwriter Lori Lansens later this month as part of a partnership with Project Bookmark Canada.
The ceremony will take place at the library’s Chatham Branch, 120 Queen St., on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
Project Bookmark Canada is a national charitable organization dedicated to celebrating Canadian authors and the places that inspired their work. It installs literary plaques in locations featured in Canadian literature, connecting readers with stories set in real communities. The “bookmarks” commemorate imagined scenes in real places, fostering an appreciation for Canadian literature while celebrating local history and cultural heritage.
Plaques will be installed at two library locations. Thamesville native and author Robertson Davies was honoured with a plaque in September.
The Lansens plaque will feature an excerpt from her novel “The Girls,” which depicts life in a small Ontario town, with memorable visits to Chatham, Windsor and London, for conjoined twins Rose and Ruby Darlen.
Lansens will attend the unveiling and share a reading. The event will also feature remarks from project supporters and community partners. Afterward, attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments and browse a collection of her work.
The library says all community members are welcome to attend the free event. More information about programs and events at the library is available at www.ckpl.ca.
Note: The poster for the trunk or treat says Saturday, Nov. 1, but the Facebook post says Sunday, Nov. 1, and Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday this year. I left the weekday out of the first story, so you may want to confirm with the organizers before publishing.
