Fighting fear with trust

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Fear is a very real and also unwelcome entity in our world.

There is the massive fear that the COVID-19 pandemic has spawned and the fallout that we have seen from that.

There is fear over unpaid bills, or a bad report from a doctor, or just the continuous stream of unending changes that come our way.

As a pastor I have seen such a spike in people struggling with anxiety, in some cases so crippling that it leads to suicidal thoughts or complete withdrawal from normal living.

As a child I also sought refuge from my fears in the presence of my parents.

They couldn’t solve every problem, but it sure felt good knowing that they were there to take charge when things seemed over my head.

There’s a better solution, though, a much better solution.

That solution is to take our fears directly to the One who knows the end from the beginning and can bring us through it.

Look what it says in Psalm 56:3-4: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?”

Those verses show that the key to finding refuge from fear is in trusting God, and specifically, in trusting the words of truth from Him, the Bible.

You may or may not be a reader of the Scriptures but let me encourage you to take a look in there.

To start, why not do some reading in the Psalms and also the life of Jesus in the first four books of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

As a daily Bible reader for over 32 years, I can tell you that much can be gained by making the Bible a priority in your life.

Why not give it a shot?
