“Station #1 and Station #2 – Chatham, attended for reports of smoke coming from (the) residence,” fire officials said in a media release.
“Crews located a small fire in one of the bedrooms on the second floor of the three-storey building. Firefighters assisted several occupants out of the building where they were treated by EMS for minor smoke inhalation.”
Fire officials added: “A firefighter was transported to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance as a precaution after sustaining a minor injury while on scene. The firefighter was treated and released shortly after. Chatham-Kent Police, Victim Services and Red Cross assisted with six occupants who were displaced.”
The cause of the fire was determined to be the result of unattended candles, fire officials say.
“Chatham-Kent Fire is reminding residents it is always best to use flameless candles, if real candles are used – never leave them unattended,” fire officials added.
The approximate loss is estimated at $100,000.
