YMCA, St. Clair Catholic launch new suspension support program in Chatham-Kent

A new program launching this fall aims to help students in Chatham-Kent turn school suspensions into opportunities for growth.

Beginning in September, the Chatham-Kent YMCA and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board will roll out Back on Track by the YMCA, an academic suspension program for students in grades 7 through 12.

The initiative, supported by a grant from the Joyce Family Foundation, is designed to keep students connected to their learning, support their well-being and provide strategies for success.

Instead of isolation, students referred to the program will have access to a safe and supportive space where they can reflect on challenges, strengthen social skills and develop personal and academic strategies. Each plan is tailored to the individual and developed in collaboration with parents, guardians and schools, with daily communication to ensure progress.

“Back on Track is a powerful example of what happens when charities, educators and philanthropic partners come together to support youth,” said Andrew Lockie, CEO of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario. “We’re proud to partner with St. Clair Catholic to help students turn setbacks into comebacks – giving them the confidence, skills and sense of belonging they need to thrive.”

Lisa Demers, director of education for St. Clair Catholic, said the collaboration highlights the importance of community partnerships.

“Life brings both highs and lows for all of us – and our students are no exception,” she said. “Back on Track is proof of what we can accomplish when we work alongside community partners who share our commitment to every young person’s future.”

The program will be housed at the Chatham-Kent YMCA. Officials say it reflects a shared vision between the YMCA and St. Clair Catholic that every young person deserves a restorative experience that fosters growth and helps them reach their full potential.
