Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 40-year-old Chatham man is facing multiple charges after a traffic stop in Chatham led to the discovery of suspected cocaine.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers conducted a traffic stop on Joseph Street on May 16, 2026, at approximately 6:39 a.m. after receiving a hit from the Automatic Licence Plate Recognition system.
Police said the investigation determined the driver was suspended and not properly wearing a seatbelt. Officers also alleged the driver failed to provide a permit or insurance for the vehicle and had a licence plate attached that did not belong to the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed the vehicle was deemed unfit to be driven on a roadway, police said.
The man was issued summonses for driving while under suspension, failing to properly wear a seatbelt, failing to surrender a permit, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, using a plate not authorized for the vehicle and operating an unsafe vehicle.
During the stop, police also learned the man was wanted for failing to attend court and arrested him on the strength of the warrant.
Police said officers located 44 grams of a substance suspected to be cocaine during a search incident to arrest. At the time, the man was allegedly bound by an undertaking with conditions not to possess controlled substances.
He was subsequently charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused was transported to police headquarters and held for bail.
