Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre launches fundraising drive for $400,000 elevator project

The Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre has confirmed plans to install an elevator in its historic building, a project organizers say is about more than accessibility — it’s about inclusion and community.

The “Reaching New Heights” elevator project will allow all members and visitors to access every part of the centre without barriers. Currently, many programs and exercise spaces are upstairs, limiting access for those with mobility challenges.

Officials said the elevator, which will resemble a traditional unit on a smaller scale, will carry up to six people or a wheelchair with support. The estimated cost is $400,000, to be covered through grants, donations and fundraising.

Fundraising is expected to take two to three years before construction can begin. The centre has received municipal support, including approval to use the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s charitable donation number for gifts of $20 or more, though raffle purchases are excluded.

The centre is also running an online 50/50 raffle to help support the campaign, available through Rafflebox. Community members are encouraged to buy tickets, volunteer and share the fundraiser to help bring the project to life.

“We’re excited to begin the next chapter and take the WAAC into an even brighter future,” the board of directors said in a statement.
