Chatham-Kent celebrates local farmers during Ontario Agriculture Week

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent joined Farm & Food Care Ontario in celebrating the contributions of local farmers, agri-food workers, and rural communities during Ontario Agriculture Week, held Oct. 6 to 12.

The municipality highlighted Chatham-Kent’s leadership in agricultural production, with more than 630,000 acres of farmland, over 2,400 farms, and 20 million square feet of greenhouse space. The region grows more than 70 different crops, many of which are exported internationally, generating more than $4 billion in annual economic activity, including $1.3 billion in farm cash receipts.

“With the current economic challenges caused by tariffs, the importance of the agri-food sector is more significant than ever. We must continue to support existing businesses, prepare for future growth, and drive new investment opportunities which is critical for economic growth in Chatham-Kent and the province,” said Sean Columbus, Chatham-Kent Economic Development Officer.

“Ontario Agriculture Week is a time to celebrate the hard work and innovation of our local producers and agri-businesses. Their dedication not only feeds our communities but also fuels our economy and positions Chatham-Kent as a key player in the global food supply chain,” said Rosemarie Montgomery, Chatham-Kent Economic Development Officer.

Municipal officials said the week was an opportunity to reflect on the importance of agriculture to both the local and provincial economies, while recognizing the people and industries that keep Chatham-Kent’s food system strong.
