Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 25-year-old Sarnia man has been arrested after police responded to a theft in progress at a Murphy Road grocery store on November 5.
Police were called to the store around 8:50 a.m. after security reported a masked man concealing items in a gym bag and his jacket pockets. The man later paid for only two small yogurts before attempting to leave without paying for the concealed items.
Officers confronted the man as he tried to exit the store and placed him under arrest. A search found about $432 worth of stolen merchandise, pepper spray, suspected methamphetamine, several credit cards not in his name, and a pipe with drug residue.
At the time of the arrest, the man was on probation with conditions prohibiting him from attending the store, possessing credit or debit cards not in his name, and requiring him to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
He was held for a bail hearing and charged with theft under $5,000, disguise with intent, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and three counts of breaching probation.
Following the hearing, he was released with conditions. Police say the accused has had 19 interactions with officers since November 2024, including seven arrests and 10 criminal charges.
