OPP officials allege: Sarnia police are investigating after a stolen vehicle rammed a cruiser during an attempted stop before being found abandoned hours later.
Police say a white Jeep was stolen from a home in the 300 block of London Road around 7:15 p.m. on November 28. Just after 8 p.m., an officer spotted the vehicle on London Line east of Modeland Road. The Jeep was initially stopped at a business, but drove off before additional units arrived.
After passing Brigden Road, the Jeep suddenly pulled onto the shoulder. The officer activated emergency lights and positioned the cruiser to block the vehicle. As the officer got out, the Jeep accelerated and hit the passenger side of the police vehicle, grinding forward along the cruiser before driving into the ditch, hitting a mailbox and fleeing at high speed. Police did not pursue due to public safety concerns.
Officers later found the Jeep abandoned around 12:50 a.m. in the 1700 block of London Line. A wallet and photo identification belonging to the suspect were located inside.
Police arrested a 21-year-old man with no fixed address the following day. He was held for a bail hearing on charges that include theft of a motor vehicle and breaching probation. Additional driving-related charges are being considered.
