Toy gun prompts police response in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Two men were briefly detained Saturday after police responded to a report of someone holding what appeared to be a handgun inside a moving vehicle.

The complaint was made around 3:37 p.m. on St. Clair Road. Chatham-Kent police assisted the OPP and conducted a high-risk traffic stop near Pioneer Line. The vehicle pulled over immediately and both occupants complied with police instructions.

The driver, an 18-year-old Chatham-Kent man, and a 25-year-old passenger from Wallaceburg told officers the item was a toy recently purchased. Police found a black plastic toy handgun and confirmed it was not a real firearm. The complainant also confirmed the men were not pointing it at anyone. Both were released unconditionally.
