Working smoke alarm alerts Walpole Island homeowners to overnight fire

A working smoke alarm is being credited with alerting homeowners to a late-night fire in a tiny home on Walpole Island.

The Walpole Island Fire Department said it was toned out late last night for a possible structure fire. Upon arrival, crews observed light smoke coming from the residence.

Thanks to a working smoke alarm, the fire was detected in its early stages, alerting the homeowners quickly. The homeowners were able to safely extinguish the fire prior to fire crews arriving on scene.

Firefighters completed a thorough investigation and confirmed the fire was fully extinguished, with no extension into the walls or ceiling.

“This incident is a strong reminder that working smoke alarms save lives and protect property by providing early warning when seconds matter most.”

Fire officials are reminding residents to test smoke alarms regularly, replace batteries as needed and ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home.
