Chatham man arrested on warrant in retail theft investigation

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Chatham-Kent police say a man has been arrested in connection with a retail theft investigation dating back to March.

Police say that on March 26, 2026, at approximately 7:20 p.m., officers responded to a report of theft at a retail store on St. Clair Street in Chatham.

Investigators allege a man entered the store, selected merchandise and concealed items before proceeding through a self-checkout area, scanning one item and passing all points of sale without attempting to pay for the concealed merchandise. Store security approached the suspect.

Through surveillance footage, police identified a 44-year-old man from Chatham and formed grounds to charge him with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

A warrant was issued for his arrest.

On April 7, 2026, at approximately 10:55 a.m., the accused was located on Grand Avenue West in Chatham and arrested on the strength of the outstanding warrant.

He was later released with a future court date of April 16, 2026.
