Severe thunderstorm watch issued as heavy rain, strong winds expected overnight

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the region, warning that conditions are favourable for dangerous weather overnight, including strong winds, large hail and heavy rainfall, alongside a special weather statement for significant rain.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.”

Environment Canada says wind gusts could reach up to 90 kilometres per hour, with hail as large as ping pong balls possible. There is also a risk of a tornado, particularly for areas closer to the Michigan border, as storms move eastward into the region overnight.

“Torrential downpours are expected.”

In addition to the thunderstorm watch, a special weather statement warns that 30 to 50 millimetres of rain is expected through Wednesday morning, with locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

“Rain, heavy at times, is expected tonight.”

Officials say the rainfall is tied to a compact low-pressure system moving into southwestern Ontario, noting that slight shifts in its track could significantly affect where the heaviest rain falls. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some areas as conditions develop.

Residents are being warned about potential flooding and hazardous travel conditions.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas.”

Local utility outages are also possible due to strong winds, which can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles.

Emergency Management Ontario is urging residents to take precautions as storms approach.

“When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”

Officials recommend seeking shelter immediately if threatening weather develops and continuing to monitor alerts and forecasts.
