Chatham-Kent and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority are continuing efforts to educate residents about species at risk through the installation of roadside signage across the municipality.
Municipal officials said more than 100 endangered, threatened or special concern species have been identified within Chatham-Kent, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and plants.
Turtles are among the animals most vulnerable to road mortality, particularly when crossing roads or nesting along shoulders. Seven of Ontario’s eight species-at-risk turtle species can be found in Chatham-Kent.
Officials said snakes are also frequently struck by vehicles, especially near wetland areas such as Erieau, Mitchell’s Bay, Prairie Siding and Shrewsbury.
The conservation authority has also collaborated with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on efforts involving aquatic species at risk through research and habitat restoration initiatives.
Residents are being encouraged to learn more about species at risk and take steps to reduce impacts on wildlife during breeding seasons and throughout the year.
