OPP reminds drivers that a stop sign means stop

The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding motorists to come to a complete stop at intersections as part of its ongoing “Stop. Look. Live.” campaign.

Police said so-called “rolling stops” increase the risk of collisions and can have life-altering consequences.

“Every time a driver approaches a stop sign, they are making a decision that impacts not only their own safety, but the safety of everyone around them. A stop sign means stop – not slow down. A complete stop provides drivers with the time needed to properly assess traffic conditions,” said Staff Sgt. Julie McLeod of the OPP’s West Region traffic and marine unit.

The OPP said drivers should remain alert and focused behind the wheel, even in familiar areas or locations with little traffic.

“Taking a few extra seconds at a stop sign is a simple decision that can prevent a devastating outcome,” police said.

Officers said enforcement efforts will continue throughout the week to improve road safety.
