OPP investigating false emergency ‘swatting’ call in Leamington

OPP officials allege: The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating a false emergency call that prompted a large response in Leamington.

Police said officers from the Leamington detachment responded to a residence on Talbot Road East at about 2:35 p.m. on June 23 after receiving a 911 report of a violent family dispute involving weapons.

Several police units and other emergency resources attended the scene.

Investigators later determined the information provided by the caller was false and that no emergency existed.

Police said so-called “swatting” incidents are intended to trigger large emergency responses and can lead to significant emotional, physical and psychological harm while diverting critical resources from genuine emergencies.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Essex County OPP or Crime Stoppers.
