Operation Safe Driver Week aims to reduce dangerous driving

A split-second decision behind the wheel can have life-changing consequences as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) joins partners in promoting safer roads during Operation Safe Driver Week.

The annual traffic safety campaign runs from July 12 to 18, 2026, and focuses on reducing dangerous driving through education, awareness and targeted enforcement.

Led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Operation Safe Driver Week focuses on improving safety among commercial and non-commercial drivers by targeting behaviours such as improper lane changes, following too closely, speeding, impaired driving and other reckless actions on the road.

In 2025, 8,826 collisions investigated in OPP jurisdictions involved commercial motor vehicles. Of those, 77 collisions were fatal, claiming the lives of 95 people.

The OPP says many collisions caused by unsafe driving behaviours are preventable.

Commercial drivers are reminded that following commercial vehicle safety requirements, including inspections, hours of service, secured cargo and the movement of dangerous goods, is critical to keeping roads safe.

The OPP is encouraging all drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel.

“Every day choices make a difference on our roads. Road safety is a collective responsibility. Make safety a top priority, drive responsibly and obey the law.”

Operation Safe Driver Week is an annual, multi-national campaign led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. Law enforcement agencies across North America patrol roadways looking for dangerous driving behaviours, including speeding, distracted driving, following too closely and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
