OPP officials allege: With Lambton County’s many waterways, residents and visitors have plenty of opportunities to enjoy time on and around the water, and members of the Lambton County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are reminding everyone to make safety a priority while enjoying local waterways.
Police say people should never swim alone and should always use a buddy system, and should wear a Canadian Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device rather than simply keeping one nearby, since emergencies can happen quickly and there may not be time to put one on once in the water. Inflatable toys such as pool floats and water wings are not designed to be life-saving devices and should not be relied upon for safety in and around water, police say.
Children need constant supervision around water, as drowning can happen quickly and quietly, and young children should always be within close reach of a responsible adult when in or around the water, according to police. Even strong swimmers can get into trouble because of waves, currents, cold water, fatigue or changing weather conditions, and people are urged not to take unnecessary chances.
Police also warn that alcohol or drug use can significantly increase the risks associated with water activities, since impairment affects judgment, balance and reaction time, and say anyone operating a boat or participating in water activities should make safety a priority. Weather and water conditions can change quickly, so people are encouraged to check conditions before heading out, let someone know where they are going and when they expect to return, and make sure they have appropriate safety equipment. Police also recommend carrying a charged cellphone or other reliable means of communication, knowing one’s location, and making sure everyone understands what to do if someone gets into trouble.
“Most water related tragedies are preventable,” police said. “Whether you’re boating, swimming, fishing or spending time at the cottage, take a few simple precautions; wear your lifejacket, supervise children closely, stay sober, know your limits, and respect the water.”
Lambton County OPP say they want everyone to enjoy Ontario’s waterways and, most importantly, make it home safely.
