The Sydenham Current’s Aaron Hall wrote a column this week announcing a nice milestone for the newspaper:
Nine months ago today, Dana and I launched the Sydenham Current.
While the drama of ups and downs, twists and turns, hitting rock bottom and making a triumphant comeback might make for a better headline or story line… this is not the case with us.

HOT TOPIC
While it is not “set in stone”, it is being recommended that Wallaceburg receive its drinking water from Chatham.
Dozens of people attended a public meeting at the UAW Hall in Wallaceburg, hosted by the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and the hired consultants for the Wallaceburg and Area Water Supply System Municipal Class EA, Stantec Consulting Ltd.
After presenting in detail a series of options, which included rehabilitating the current Wallaceburg Water Treatment Plant, Stantec’s “preferred alternative” was connecting to the Chatham water supply, which gets its water from Lake Erie.
Here is what people are saying about the meeting:
Henrie said on Facebook: “This is pure garbage. The supposed prefered alternative is a choice by people who don’t live in Wallaceburg. It raises the question of why Chatham wants us to drink their downstream water. The facts and logic that were presented were shot down by people who had real information, and the projected costs are pipedreams to sell an idea that we don’t want!”
Karen said on Facebook: ” First of all I would like to commend the people who attended the meeting, I was truly impressed with the questions and comments that were brought forth. Secondly I would like to thank Carmen McGregor and Jeff Wesley for taking the time to be there and hear what their citizens are thinking. I truly wish that my members of council from Ward 4 would have been there as well since this does affect people in Ward 4 as well, not just Ward 5 (this another reason to change the boundaries; but that is a separate issue). Well, Wallaceburg, I believe, we have yet another fight on our hands, but I am confident that our citizens and our representatives on council will do everything in their power to make sure this does not happen, unless it is a done deal (we thought the walking bridge was a done deal and look what we accomplished there). Please everyone, if you have time to comment on facebook you have time to send in your comments to the people who truly matter. Their contact information is at the end of the article. I, personally will be in contact with Carmen McGregor and Jeff to see what I else I can do.”
Ryan said on Facebook: “It would sit better with me if this was really a recommendation but it really is NOT! After sitting through a bias meeting last night and hearing how bringing the water from Chatham is the best option. The best option didn’t even get looked at. Run a new line down Dufferin Ave. to our old water intake. This would also kill two birds with one stone. This would upgrade the existing emergency line that is in place from Lambton County that they already know needs to be upgraded. SPEAK UP PEOPLE!!”
